1.   Summary

This product bulletin announces availability of the Fibre Channel (FCP) ESX Host Utilities 3.0 for Native OS for First Customer Ship via NOW™ (NetApp on the Web) and in the current Quote Tool release.

The FCP ESX Host Utilities 3.0 are a host-software-based product that delivers tools and documentation to support the integration of NetApp FCP storage systems with VMware® ESX native host environments using ESX native multipathing, volume management and file system, x86 and x86-64 (AMD64, Xeon EM64T) server architectures, and Emulex or QLogic 2Gb and 4Gb PCI-X or PCI-Express HBAs.  The FCP ESX Host Utilities 3.0 are required to ensure proper configuration and support of NetApp FCP storage systems, and consist of:

·         The sanlun software tool to view paths to LUNs configured on NetApp storage systems.

·         HBA configuration utility to set automatically the required HBA timeout values.

·         Path configuration utility to determine primary paths and set preferred paths.

·         Diagnostic scripts for collecting and reporting host, switch, and NetApp storage configuration information.

·         Documentation describing how to configure an ESX-host-based FCP connection to a NetApp storage system, including commands and procedures.

·         Note: The FCP ESX Host Utilities 3.0 do NOT include HBA drivers, which are distributed by VMware as part of the ESX Server operating system distribution.

·         Note:  The FCP ESX Host Utilities 3 are a software product and do NOT include an HBA.

2.   What’s New

The FCP ESX Host Utilities 3.0 augment previously supported ESX Server 3.0.1 environments with tools and documentation to enhance the integration of NetApp FCP storage systems in ESX Server environments. The FCP ESX Host Utilities support physical ESX Server environments and are guest operating system neutral.  The FCP ESX Host Utilities do not currently provide integration tools or capabilities for guest operating systems.  For a list of the guest operating systems supported by NetApp with ESX Server, please refer to the NetApp SAN Support Matrix.

3.   System Requirements

Supported platforms

1)       For the most recent configuration support information, please refer to the NetApp SAN Support Matrix at http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/san/fcp_iscsi_config/index.shtml.

2)       ESX Server 3.0.1 physical machine level support:

                                       i.      The FCP ESX Host Utilities are designed to support the integration of NetApp FCP storage systems into ESX Server environments and to be guest operating system neutral.  The FCP ESX Host Utilities do not currently provide integration tools or capabilities for the guest operating systems.  For a list of the guest operating systems supported by NetApp with ESX Server, please refer to the NetApp SAN Support Matrix.

3)       x86 and x86-64 (AMD64, Xeon EM64T) server architectures in 32-bit mode (ESX Server is a 32-bit operating system).

4)       Emulex and QLogic 2Gb and 4Gb PCI-X and PCI-Express HBAs:

                                       i.      Please refer to the NetApp SAN Support Matrix for a list of the HBAs supported.

ii.      Note:  For SAN boot configurations with Emulex HBAs, NetApp requires setting the HBA node timeout to 30 seconds.  The FCP ESX Host Utilities set the Emulex node timeout value to 120 seconds by default, and this value must be changed for SAN boot configurations. Please refer to NetApp Knowledge Bulletin (KB) 20936 at http://now.netapp.com/Knowledgebase/solutionarea.asp?id=kb20936 for details.

5)       Note:  SnapDrive® for Windows® and SnapDrive for UNIX® do not currently generally support ESX Server or its corresponding guest operating systems.  Guest operating system support is intended for future versions of SnapDrive.
